What is heart bypass surgery?

Also known as coronary artery bypass surgery, CABG or pronounced as “cabbage” surgery, is a common surgical procedure which incorporates diverting blood around the clogged arteries of heart. CABG is a gold standard surgical treatment for coronary artery disease. The success rate of CABG is 99.8 %.

Why is CABG surgery done?

The arteries bringing blood to the heart muscles also known as coronary arteries can become clogged due to plaque formation or a building up of fat or cholesterol. This plaque formation can slow down or even stoop blood flow from flowing through blood vessels which results in chest pain or even heart attack. Increased blood flow to the heart muscle can help to reduce the chest pain and also reduce the risk of heart attack.

Heart Bypass Preparation

In order to prepare for CABG, requires detailed information about all the reports in form of a medical questionnaire, pulmonary test, ECG and blood work; angiogram is few cases. All this information helps the doctors to understand the patient’s situation better. The doctors then give specific instructions about the diet change which should be followed before surgery. The entire pre surgery test would be done at our partner hospitals. The tests involve chest x-ray, ECG, blood test and coronary angiogram.

How is heart bypass surgery done?

An incision is made down the center of the chest along the chest bone. The rib cage is open apart in order to expose the heart. Once the heart is exposed, it is stopped and the pumping and blood circulation function is taken over by heart-lung machine. Surgeon takes a segment of a healthy blood vessel from another part of body and detour the blocked coronary artery. A patient can undergo up to 3 or more bypass grafts depending upon the number of arteries blocked. There has been new surgical procedures evolved which removes the use of heart-lung machine or the need of making larger incision. The off-pump or beating heart surgery: It can be done on a beating heart using exclusive equipments which can stabilize or quite the area of heart on which surgeon is working. This surgery is done on a beating heart and that is why it is not suggested on every one. Minimally Invasive Surgery: This kind of surgery allows the surgeon to perform coronary bypass through numerous small incisions. This kind of surgery is done in only certain conditions.

Post CABG surgery care

Post surgery, the patient is moved to the hospital bed in cardiac ICU. Heart rate and blood pressure are continuously monitored using sophisticated machinery for 12 to 24 hours. Family members are allowed for visits. Medications are given intravenously and breathing tube or endotracheal tube will keep in place till doctor’s advice. During the recovery time, the some test would be run in order to assess the patient’s condition better.

Popular and safe alternatives of coronary artery bypass

The alternatives of CABG can be medical therapy with medication and non surgical treatments namely laser angioplasty, balloon angioplasty, atherectomy or stents.
